I agree with Belinda Webb for two reasons. The first is that she argues for both sides of her story and the second is that she talks about how slang is not wrong and how it is going to develop in our everyday language.
Belinda Webb says in one of her quotes that “Emma Thompson of all people ought to appreciate that Shakespeare slang became part of our everyday language”. I think this is a good point because she is explaining that Emma Thompson is not appreciating that one of the best writers in the world made slang and Emma Thompson is trying to say it’s not right that slang should be used in our language. However Belinda Webb argues against her saying it is right to use slang and Belinda Webb says in one of her other quotes “ This kind of talk has got me well vexed. Listen up yeah, there’s nowt wrong with slang, so you need to stop mitheren d’ya get me.(people in the north will understand)”. So as we can see that this kind of slang is already being used in the north and if I define the words mitheren and d’ya get me they mean bothering and well, comprende.
Belinda Webb doesn’t agree with slang but yet again she does disagree with it. This is because she thinks that in the future slang is going to be developed in our language and in fact it has already been in a couple of movies (these are my examples of movies). Attack the block, kidulthood, Adulthood, anuvahood, illegal manners and many more. These are some of the slang words said in the film Attack the block ‘ Shut up. Wanna get MURKED, innit?’ This phrase was said at the beginning of the film where a group of boys were robbing a women. The word ‘Murked’ means stabbed, beaten up, a shorter way of threatening someone, trying to get them scared of you. Another phrase near the beginning of the film this is the phrase ‘ Quick, FAM, ‘fore the FEDS come’. The word ‘Fam’ is a short way of saying mate or friend teenagers mainly use this type of word. ‘Feds’ is a slang word of police, people who mainly use slang words will use this phrase to call them instead of what they are really called. this is the last example, ‘Feels like just another day in the ENDS to me. The word ‘Ends’ is a way of describing where you live, what area in London are you from.
Belinda Webb uses another quote that I found very useful and to me was a really good quote and it was “A love of communication and an inventiveness of speech that continues to make English one of the most interesting languages in the world”, I believe this quote is true and I agree with Belinda Webb because loads of people from different countries are coming into England going some where like London or up the north and they will hear slang and they would think that it would be interesting and they will like it and most probably when they go back to their country they will talk about London and how they speak and how it has developed a lot.
William Shakespeare is a famous writer who wrote amazing plays such as Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet. He also is known for writing slang and using it in his plays. One of the slang words that William Shakespeare used is “FANCY-MONGER; Someone for whom love is their business. A trades person for amorous affection. This slang word is from the play “As You Like It”.
